The fact is that the majority of our thoughts and actions are on autopilot. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing either. Our habits, routines, impulses, and reactions carry us through our lives so we don’t have to stop and think about it every time we wipe our ass or start a car.
The problem is when we’re on autopilot for so long that we forget we’re on autopilot. Because when we’re not even aware of our own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions, then we no longer control them. Whereas a person with self-awareness is able to exercise a little meta-cognition and say, “Hmm… every time my sister calls me and asks for money, I end up drinking a lot of vodkas.
The problem is when we’re not even aware of our own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions, then we no longer control them. Whereas a person with self-awareness just hits the bottle and doesn’t look back.
Again, this is a problem we all have in some way. I’m not talking about being too self-conscious about everything you do. I’m talking about just being aware of what you’re doing and how you’re doing it.
Thats a good point. It is a big problem for all of us. Not only do we not have the sense to realize when we are being too self-conscious, we don’t even realize that we are being too self-conscious, so we just end up being sloppy. Like our friend, “We’re the only ones who ever need to practice on our knees”.
I have to admit that I find myself often being so self-conscious about what I do that I end up making things worse. I hate to admit this, but I also find myself doing the same thing over and over again the same way, but I never actually do it. I guess I should be more aware of this problem and how I am making myself worse, but this is one of my biggest fears.
I’m going to tackle this problem more closely in the future, but just to be clear, I am not suggesting you should consciously practice with your hands on your head, or even your feet on a mat. That might be helpful, but I would suggest that you are practicing with your body in particular.
This is simply something you can’t change so you can’t really do anything about it. A lot of people believe they have to practice mindfulness in order to get better, but I don’t know that’s true. Mindfulness is something that takes practice, and for most of us, it just comes naturally without much effort. I know personally that I can’t do anything to make this happen, so maybe I should just give up.
I’d just like to say that I just don’t feel as though I’ve done a good job of learning from my mistakes, so if you have any thoughts to share please let me know.
