I agree that the console market has become very niche. People are simply so accustomed to the console that it no longer exists. I dont think this is going to change anytime soon. While youd think that a casual gamer or someone who just doesnt watch tv wouldnt care, the casual gamer is an increasingly large user of the console. I also agree that console games are becoming a niche.
For the casual gamer, console gaming is an extremely easy form of entertainment. The console is so easy to use that many people can only afford to play one game at a time.
Its not a matter of niche or niche. Its a matter of choice. The console is not a video game. Its a game console to which you can play whatever game you want, whenever you want. If you just wanted a game of the Mario or Sonic variety it would be easier to get that for yourself. Its not like you are going to own an Atari 2600 or a Nintendo GameCube or an Xboxes Gamecube.
I’m not talking about Nintendo’s game console. I’m talking about console game systems of the past. I’m talking about a time when you could play a game in one sitting, no more than a couple minutes at a time, and never had to worry about battery life, memory, or even software update issues.
Console games didn’t take over much of our homes. Most of us had an Atari and a Gameboy, playing games on them made the rooms feel more spacious, the games were more advanced, and we were more likely to buy the games we wanted. As computers became more popular we were able to play games on PCs, the joy of the console game system.
Console games are becoming more and more niche as a medium, and this is a good thing. However, console games are becoming more and more niche as a medium, so consoles need to expand their horizons. While I’d love to see consoles add more games from AAA studios to the console repertoire, the reality is that consoles need to focus more on the niche market if they’re going to grow their following.
